Three Hours to Check in for an International Flight?

Can't we all just get along?

Before reporting on our departure from Singapore, I want to share my impression of this amazing city. This compact city-state boasts one of the most diverse mixes of ethnicities, races, cultures, and religions in the world, which maintains perhaps the most harmonious population I have experienced. One person who was raised in the city, explained how, from a very young age, children are taught to get along with everybody, otherwise, the disunity would jeopardize the country, its identity, and its hard won independence. I wish we could spread that message across to our country.

We got up early (3 A.M.) for our ride to the airport. We arrived about three hours early as recommended for international flights. However, the counter to check bags did not even open for about an hour, so we waited in the terminal entrance area. We flew Scoot Airlines, a small local subsidiary of Singapore Airlines. When we finally got checked in and our baggage weighed, we were okay at 25 kg(about 62 pounds) per checked bag; fortunately, our carryon bags were not weighed. We were assigned seats in an exit row. Even with the increased leg space, we asked to change due to the responsibility required of that location and the potential for language issues. I rate this regional airline higher than Frontier since the seats reclined and a snack was provided for the short flight.

We arrived in Phuket, Thailand and were met by our prearranged ride to our hotel, Winrisa Palace, which was located close to the airport.  This hotel cost only about $15.00 USD a night, which was $100 USD a night less than the one in Singapore. Our room was much more spacious, was located slightly away from Phuket’s downtown area, and met all our criteria for cost and amenities for our stay. The owners lived in the front apartment and greeted us warmly.

After settling in, we took a short walk and spotted a nice looking massage spa across the busy four lane street. Talk about innocents abroad! We were able to cross to the median okay, even in rush hour on right hand drive roadways without identifiable crosswalks at the traffic circle nearby; but we were now stuck in the middle of the street. Finally, a police officer spotted our predicament and stopped the traffic to get us safely to the other side.

We delayed our return attempt for a couple of hours by both getting 90 minute, full body, Thai massages at the salon for about $21.00 each. After the massage, we ordered a Thai dinner at the neighboring restaurant. This had an open wall facing the street, which we later found out is almost universal outside Southeast Asian urban areas and frequently inside the urban neighborhoods. Our dinner included stir fry and the ubiquitous steamed or sticky rice.

The traffic rush had ended; the street was nearly empty except for well spaced motorbikes and infrequent cars. We crossed easily and safely to our hotel.

One more country added to my list, now up to 72. We will tour Phuket and its offerings after breakfast.

Often tone, volume, and non-verbal clues can increase your understanding of the local activities as you travel.

The pillars and center cap are reminders of the Buddhist sacred elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. Earth - the large rectangular base. Water - the lotus petals. Fire - the flame tips at the corners. Air - the vase shape. Space - the tapering peak.

This really was on the way from Vientiane to Luan Probang, Laos. This ferry is built with empty, plastic storage drums and uses the flow of the Nam Xong River to push it from shore to shore along an anchoring cable.  No fuel needed. No moving parts. And low exterior maintenance.

Due to technical and timing conflicts, we have fallen woefully behind in our posting.
Therefore, we are changing out postings to almost exclusively show photographic images with short captions while seeking to post more days to make up for our almost 2 month backlog.

Today is Don’s Birthday!
I had bought a birthday card for him that I actually knew where it was and had it for the trip, but it was about camping and it was supposed to be when were in New Zealand or Australia. I bought it a good year before the trip. At least I had a card for him.
Today we are taking a Thai cooking class at a farm where they grow some of the produce. We are going to a market before to learn what the local products are. Don loves taking pictures at markets so this will be a good start to his day.

Don woke and returned to the Plaza of the Three Kings for the early morning sunlight to best light the statue. To his surprise a worker was busily placing flower leis and golden sash belts on the statues. This helped bright the scene greatly
After our now standard noodle breakfast, we engaged a local taxi driver to take us outside the ancient city walls with their protective moat to both Wat Umong, the Tunnel Temple, and Wat Sri Suphan, the Silver Temple. After breakfast there were two other Wats I wanted to see. One was the silver wat and the other was outside the old city in caves on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. We got a cab to take us to the cave one and had him wait so he could take us to the one in town.

We cleaned up after playing with the elephants in the river and went to check out several local Buddhist Temples of interest.

On the way back to the hotel yesterday, July 20th, we had discovered Wat Inthakhin Sadue Muang almost in the middle of the street, but Don had been too tired to appreciate it and he did not take any pictures, then.
