New BFFs in Singapore

How to get a fashion model to pose for free

We went back to the food court across the street for a quick breakfast. You would think eggs, toast, and coffee could not get messed up. Wrong! The Singapore version provides four slices of reasonably dark toast with chilled butter packets, coffee with both creamer and sugar, however, the whites and yolks of the boiled eggs were warmed only enough to cook half the white and none of the yolks. Talk about soft boiled!

We took a taxi to the Singapore Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. We arrived during the fellowship time before the English language service and while a Korean language service was in progress in another sanctuary. We were welcomed and were immediately handed a packet of chicken rice. As we ate, a lady parishioner, originally from Germany, introduced herself and explained she has lived in Singapore, since her late Thai husband passed, and has remained active in the church.

We were pleasantly surprised at the contemporary service, which was lead predominantly by the praise team. Their music was very familiar to us and included “Amazing Grace: My Chains Are Gone", " Build My Life," and “My Living Hope” for a very familiar service. The friendly parishioners were mostly Asian with a few Western Europeans. Our attendance tripled the number American worshippers.

We had planned to walk to our next destination, the Botanical Gardens, however, because it was raining, one gentleman offered to drive us in his own car. We accepted the friendly offer and were taken to the entrance for The Orchid Gardens. I had visited this national treasure during a familiarization tour several years ago and vouched that practically every variety of orchid in the world is on display among the flower beds. Even in the rain, Don was like a kid in a candy store with his camera and took over 150 separate images in about 2 hours. The garden has many well placed and often covered seating areas, where I sat and waited for him to get too tired or too wet to continue.

We even encountered a trio, who were engaged in a fashion shoot of traditional formal attire. The model and assistant, immediately, fell in love with Jane's multi-colored, "swoosh," hairdo. We exchanged photographs with her newest BFF's. The weather broke as Don called an end to his flower power session.

With the aid of two policemen, we found our way to the bus stop for the direct route back to our hotel.

For convenience, we chose another vendor in the food court across the street for dinner; this time selecting  Asian entrees. We violated a family maxim, 'Life is too short, Eat dessert first," and splurged on post meal gelato dessert at the shop next door to the hotel. I had a cup with yuzu and mango scoops. Yuzu is a Chinese citrus fruit, which tastes very good in this combination. Don, also, had a cup with chocolate and salted caramel scoops.

We shoehorned ourselves into our “tiny” room to rest and prepare for our next adventure filled day.

Often tone, volume, and non-verbal clues can increase your understanding of the local activities as you travel.
A composite of several encounters in our first 6 months of this yearlong adventure.

The pillars and center cap are reminders of the Buddhist sacred elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. Earth - the large rectangular base. Water - the lotus petals. Fire - the flame tips at the corners. Air - the vase shape. Space - the tapering peak.

This really was on the way from Vientiane to Luan Probang, Laos. This ferry is built with empty, plastic storage drums and uses the flow of the Nam Xong River to push it from shore to shore along an anchoring cable.  No fuel needed. No moving parts. And low exterior maintenance.

Due to technical and timing conflicts, we have fallen woefully behind in our posting.
Therefore, we are changing out postings to almost exclusively show photographic images with short captions while seeking to post more days to make up for our almost 2 month backlog.

Today is Don’s Birthday!
I had bought a birthday card for him that I actually knew where it was and had it for the trip, but it was about camping and it was supposed to be when were in New Zealand or Australia. I bought it a good year before the trip. At least I had a card for him.
Today we are taking a Thai cooking class at a farm where they grow some of the produce. We are going to a market before to learn what the local products are. Don loves taking pictures at markets so this will be a good start to his day.

Don woke and returned to the Plaza of the Three Kings for the early morning sunlight to best light the statue. To his surprise a worker was busily placing flower leis and golden sash belts on the statues. This helped bright the scene greatly
After our now standard noodle breakfast, we engaged a local taxi driver to take us outside the ancient city walls with their protective moat to both Wat Umong, the Tunnel Temple, and Wat Sri Suphan, the Silver Temple. After breakfast there were two other Wats I wanted to see. One was the silver wat and the other was outside the old city in caves on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. We got a cab to take us to the cave one and had him wait so he could take us to the one in town.

We cleaned up after playing with the elephants in the river and went to check out several local Buddhist Temples of interest.

On the way back to the hotel yesterday, July 20th, we had discovered Wat Inthakhin Sadue Muang almost in the middle of the street, but Don had been too tired to appreciate it and he did not take any pictures, then.
