7 Islands and Night Biolumenesence

Are you sure you want to go out in rough water, AGAIN?

We got to sleep in after a few early mornings. We had arranged for another speedboat transport to the 7 Island Tour with the capstone being snorkeling among bioluminescent plankton at night. This is what I was most looking forward to.

We visited several islands, including a cruise past Chicken Island which named for a rocky outcropping the locals think looks like a chicken; however, we thought turkey was a better description. Due to high seas, we were unable to visit Maya Island, the secret hideaway of the assassin, Scalamanga, from the James Bond “Man with the Golden Gun.” We visited several other island beaches where most of the passengers went snorkeling or strolling on the beach. Don joined the beachcombers with plenty of time to take pictures, while I again relaxed on the boat.

We arrived at Phranang Beach where we took an almost 2 km (1 mi) walk down the pier to get to shore and along unmarked trails and pathways through the resort to reach the restaurant which would serve our dinner. Rain began falling during our walk and turned into a tropical deluge just as we arrived at the buffet that was laid out for our guides to serve. We had an enjoyable meal of Thai barbeque before braving the trek back to the beach and out to our speedboat.

After dinner we went to the plankton area and our guide turned off all the boats’ lights and tossed a bucket of seawater onto the deck. The plankton lit up the deck like a scattering of twinkling stars in a midnight sky. We were told to get into the water and to wave our hands around in front of ourselves to activate the microorganisms and to show off their luminescence. For a few moments I thought the flashed might have been from the sparklies in my nail polish. Then I remembered, no light was available to light up my nails. This then became a neat experience, but both Don and I had expected more of an overall glow based on the brochure image. Don pointed out with the right camera set up that billions of individual plankton flashes could be built in a perception of a glowing ring where waves had crashed onto the shoreline over several minutes.

We headed back to Ao Nang and our open sided tuk tuk ride back into Krabi. Again, we were soaked both from the rain and the wave splashes from the boat.

Time for a shower and bed, ready for our flight the next day to Chiang Mai.

Often tone, volume, and non-verbal clues can increase your understanding of the local activities as you travel.

The pillars and center cap are reminders of the Buddhist sacred elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. Earth - the large rectangular base. Water - the lotus petals. Fire - the flame tips at the corners. Air - the vase shape. Space - the tapering peak.

This really was on the way from Vientiane to Luan Probang, Laos. This ferry is built with empty, plastic storage drums and uses the flow of the Nam Xong River to push it from shore to shore along an anchoring cable.  No fuel needed. No moving parts. And low exterior maintenance.

Due to technical and timing conflicts, we have fallen woefully behind in our posting.
Therefore, we are changing out postings to almost exclusively show photographic images with short captions while seeking to post more days to make up for our almost 2 month backlog.

Today is Don’s Birthday!
I had bought a birthday card for him that I actually knew where it was and had it for the trip, but it was about camping and it was supposed to be when were in New Zealand or Australia. I bought it a good year before the trip. At least I had a card for him.
Today we are taking a Thai cooking class at a farm where they grow some of the produce. We are going to a market before to learn what the local products are. Don loves taking pictures at markets so this will be a good start to his day.

Don woke and returned to the Plaza of the Three Kings for the early morning sunlight to best light the statue. To his surprise a worker was busily placing flower leis and golden sash belts on the statues. This helped bright the scene greatly
After our now standard noodle breakfast, we engaged a local taxi driver to take us outside the ancient city walls with their protective moat to both Wat Umong, the Tunnel Temple, and Wat Sri Suphan, the Silver Temple. After breakfast there were two other Wats I wanted to see. One was the silver wat and the other was outside the old city in caves on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. We got a cab to take us to the cave one and had him wait so he could take us to the one in town.

We cleaned up after playing with the elephants in the river and went to check out several local Buddhist Temples of interest.

On the way back to the hotel yesterday, July 20th, we had discovered Wat Inthakhin Sadue Muang almost in the middle of the street, but Don had been too tired to appreciate it and he did not take any pictures, then.
